MEXICO CITY — Roberto Gomez Bolaños, the iconic Mexican comedian who wrote and played the boy television character “El Chavo del Ocho” that defined a generation for millions of Latin American children, died Friday, the Televisa television network said. Known as “Chespirito”, he changed comedy in Latin America, taking his inspiration from Laurel and Hardy as well as Mexico’s other transcendent comedian who eventually made it to Hollywood, Cantinflas. His two most famous characters were “El Chavo del Ocho,” who lived in the homes of Latin America and beyond with his barrel, freckles, striped shirt and frayed cap, and the naive superhero “El Chapulin Colorado,” or “The Crimson Grasshopper.” His morning show was a staple for preschoolers, much like “Captain Kangaroo” in the United States.

He warmed the hearts of millions with a clean comedy style far removed from the sexual innuendo and obscenity-laced jokes popular today.

The goofy superhero dressed in a red bodysuit and hood with antennae that helped him detect danger miles away and had was known for constantly repeated his signature phrases, 'You didn't count on my cleverness' and 'All the good people, follow me.'He also delved successfully in theatre for adults and in 1992 he produced, directed and acted in 11 and 12, the story of a man who loses his genitals in an accident and wants to impregnate his wife.

Chespirito is considered by many to tie Cantinflas as Mexico's greatest comedian, and his sketch comedy shows are beloved amongst the entire Latin American population. Most of them take place in the main courtyard or of the "vecindad" (community houses) where almost all of the characters live.

The only exception is Brazil, where the show was renamed and got an over the top translation.

Depite its excessive regionalism, its lack of "sophistication" and its very dated appearance, the show is still very popular in syndication and has been a staple of TV channels in not only Mexico, but also almost all Central and South American countries (And Spain) for years.

However, based on the availability notices on the episodes, and two conversations with Netflix Customer Service, it appears Seasons 1-6 are the best bet for what's leaving now.

Seasons 7-10 are scheduled to expire beginning in December of this year.On "Chespirito", few new Chavo scripts were written, but restaging of old Chavo episodes were a regular feature on the show until Chespirito retired the character in 1992.
